The Time Square Shopping mall used to be the most grandiose mall in KL. It featured 10 floors of stores, an IMAX cinema, a bowling alley and…. a full on amusement park, including a roller coaster! (see. pictures). Though as we witnessed in all major Asian capitals, Malls rise and fall, and there can only be one, or at the very most two, that are shinning brightly at any given moment in time. Today those shiny stars are the Pavilion and the Suria in KL, the Element in Hong Kong, and the Paragon in Bangkok. But it is actually a lot more interesting to wander in the half empty alleys of the half-forgotten malls of the past, go to the movies in huge empty theater halls (in KL we saw The Karate Kid with about 10 other people in the hugest IMAX theatre, for what we later learnt was actually the very last screening before they closed it for good…) and have a chat with vendors or security guards who will tell you all about the grandiose past of their mall, when it used to be the epicenter of conspicuous consumption.
